In a context of rising tension and violence, the Lebanese Minister of Health, Firas Abiad, offered a heartbreaking report on the consequences of Israeli attacks in Lebanon since October of last year.

During a press conference in Beirut, Abiad revealed that the conflict has left a devastating toll of 4,047 dead and 16,593 wounded. Among the victims are 316 children and 790 women, underlining the scale of human suffering in this crisis.

The impact of the attacks is not limited to the loss of life; medical infrastructure has also been severely affected.

According to Abiad, 67 hospitals have been targeted, with 40 directly hit and seven others forcibly closed.

This situation raises serious concerns about the health system’s ability to care for the wounded amidst a humanitarian crisis that is worsening day by day.

Despite a ceasefire agreement on November 27 that provides for a 60-day cessation of hostilities and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, tensions persist.

There have been violations of the agreement, which raises doubts about its long-term viability.

The situation on the border remains volatile. A Lebanese military intelligence source reported that the Lebanese army has re-established its presence at four sites west of the border town of Shebaa, approaching only 700 meters from the Israeli positions on occupied farms.

This move could be interpreted as an attempt to reassert Lebanese sovereignty in a historically disputed region, but it could also increase tensions between the two countries.

The combination of a high number of civilian casualties, the destruction of critical infrastructure, and uncertainty about the future of the ceasefire presents a bleak picture for Lebanon.
